Pope Francis refers to the recent events as (part of) World War III.
The larger picture of escalating war atrocities in several countries should not be decoupled from a wide ranging engagement between different secular and religious groups that have a particular focus on urban areas.
Cities are where marginalised and deprived religious and non-religious groups tend to be concentrated and where tensions are frequently greatest.
We are in need of new research that directly feeds urban regeneration actions and political debate more generally. The purpose would be steps towards a more enlightened urban Europe and a progressive politics of hope in the 21st century.
Utopian maybe. And necessary.
